How Frustrated Are You?
An important tool within a Calm Horizon treatment is working with how you feel about what you want to change. It is not always your anxiety or stress, it can be how you think about your anxiety and stress that needs to be treated. How many times have you said to yourself in a moment of anger or frustration ‘I knew that was going to happen‘?
What is frustrating you? Is something awful in your life and you cannot stand it? Has something happened and it’s the end of the world?

Emotional Responsibility
We are going to do a little work on emotional responsibility. Just go along with this, it may be new to you, it maybe not. The central theory of emotional responsibility is that whilst events in our lives may be painful and traumatic, our response and actions towards these events are largely managed by our beliefs. In other words it is not events that mould our lives, but how we think about them.
This theory can be represented by the following;

This exercise is designed to help you get used to distinguishing between the various parts of a statement.
I have highlighted which are the A, the B and the C in each statement.
- 1. ‘I feel so angry, I should not be treated like this, refused treatment simply because I smoke.’
- 2. ‘I get anxious just thinking about flying, it proves how inadequate I am.’
- 3. ‘When I am by myself, I must have chocolate, I feel guilty about eating chocolate when lonely.’
- 4. ‘I feel panicky each time I hear the dental drill, I always need the certainty that I can jump out of the chair immediately.’
- 5. ‘I feel so ashamed when I think about the stupid things I said the other day. I should just keep my mouth shut.’
Description
“Picture your mind as a lake. Only when calm can you see the ripples of ideas and change. If you are anxious, your mind is like the North Sea in a force 8 gale. You could throw the Eiffel Tower in and it would never be noticed by you.”
When we make demands of ourselves, we hold ourselves hostage to a rigid and dogmatic way of thinking. This cycle can continue unconsciously for a life time. Think about what frustrates or annoys you. Is it the situation that frustrates you or is it how you think about it? What rules are being broken?
For example have you ever tried to sleep so much that you do not sleep at all?
How frustrating is that? By focussing on trying to sleep you create the opposite effect. How about accepting that you are awake, letting go of the frustration will bring immediate benefits. Check out the ‘Sleep Well’ page for more information. Calm Horizon treatments work to get you back to a normal and healthy sleep pattern as well as reducing symptoms such as teeth grinding and jaw pain.
